Music theory can be very hard to understand for most people. It would take much time and practice to read or write music, understand the structure of scales and chords and so on. Besides books or a good teacher, you could try Musition to improve your knowledge and skills. It will not make you an expert overnight, but its large number of courses and exercises will definitely help you understand music theory faster than traditional means. It is very well structured and it provides a good overview of your progress.

The installation package is over 50 MB, so it will take some time to download, unless you are using a high speed Internet connection. You will have to go through a standard setup process, which does not include complex settings or confusing options. Musition is available in Windows and Mac OS X editions and you don't need the latest hardware to run it.

Musition's interface presents a large number of exercises, which are organized in five categories: pitch, rhythm, terms and symbols, harmony and instruments. The exercises cover a wide range of instruments and other topics, but you can filter them according to your personal needs, if you focus on a specific instrument or music genre. Selecting a syllabus from a drop menu, located in the upper left corner of the interface, will disable certain exercises, leaving only the ones you need.

Most exercises involve selecting a correct answer, but some of them require performing different actions. For example, if you are trying to identify musical notes, one of the exercises will show you certain notes and you will have to identify them, by clicking the appropriate answer. During another exercise, you will have to place certain notes in their correct positions. In some cases, you will have to select an answer or perform other actions, after listening to a sound.

The software's functionality does not stop at exercising your skills and knowledge. Musition focuses on learning as well. Even if you don't know the first thing about music theory, you may go through the program's numerous courses and start from the ground up. The lessons are easy to understand and they include many examples, as well as exercises. If you read something about certain notes, you will find them on a music score, on the same page and you may click it to hear the notes themselves.

You can bring up your practice, test and course results on a tabbed window. It is possible to filter the results by date or syllabus and hide topics without results. If you want to show your results to your friends or teachers, you may generate a detailed report, print it or save it in CSV, SVG or PDF format. The software includes a series of administrative tools, which you can use to make various adjustments to each course or exercise, manage classes, topics and much more.

Pros

Musition includes a large number of lessons, examples and exercises. It covers almost everything you need to know about music, but the most important part is that you can use it even if you don't have any knowledge about music. The software provides courses for both experienced musicians and beginners.

Cons

While using the trial version, you can access only a single course. Even if you don't know anything about music, Musition will teach you everything you need, from basic terminology to advanced exercises.
